Farm Projects

As our farm is our retirement plan, we have many projects in various stages of completion.

Betty Sue

In March 2022 we purchased Agnes, our first Lowline Beef heifer. She calved a heifer in June, Betty Sue! These two ladies will be our breed cows for our small organic grass fed beef operation! Rotational grazing is a regenerative farming practice that sequesters carbon in and increases biodiversity in our soil. Healthy soil produces healthy food!

Tomato Hoop House Raising

With the financial help of an EQUIPP Grant, and the physical help of friends, neighbors, and CSA members, we raised our large hoop house in April 2023! Most of it went up in a weekend, leaving the single sheet of plastic to go up another day. Later in the week, with the help of four others, we got the plastic stretched to enclose the hoop house. It was an adventure in the late afternoon/early evening breezes!

Silage Tarp

A newly placed silage tarp. These are not small, or lightweight! A great regenerative farming tool, used to kill pervasive weeds. Here we have some Knotweed we are working to remove. We will keep this tarp during the winter and spring, planting our fall crops in the “no weeds” soil below.

Clementine

An ode to the dairy roots of our farm and Claudia's dairy experience, we have Clementine! She is a 3 year old Jersey, and we plan to breed her in Spring of 2024. Pictured here is our employee Evan and her fiancé Kai, who graced us with their engagement photo shoot on our farm! (And Mt. Rainier of course).

Dairy Barn

Our turn of the Century Dairy Barn. Made from wood milled right here in the old National Mill, perhaps from trees felled on the property. It has 24 milk stations. That was a lot of milking with no automation and no electricity! The barn is on our long term to do list. It needs a new roof and a foundation to save it from eventual falling down.

Our Herd of Fiber Sheep

Our herd of fiber sheep, five Shetlands. They are particularly fond of Jim, as he does not come to the field without herbivore cookies! Claudia was gifted a beautiful loom, now she just has to learn how to use it. Rugs are in our future!

Historic Milk House

The historic milk house, now chicken coop. It still has the cement trough used to cool milk with creek water before refrigeration. This winter's project. Needs a new roof, roof vents, linseed oil, window panes replaced. Got the oil, so there is a start!

Compost Facility

The Tilth Alliance and Pierce County Conservation granted us funds to build an on farm compost facility! Once complete, we can produce quality compost for use in our grazing fields and garden! A big Thank You to these wonderful agencies assisting farmers! Just the roof left to build, and it will be up and running!

NRCS Grant

In summer of 2021, we received a grant from NRCS in conjunction with Pierce County Conservation to assist us in the removal of invasive blackberry along our seasonal creek, and replace it with pollinator shrubs. This is a three year project!

Washington Conservation Corp

This great crew spent six days, over 100 hours in total labor, cutting and digging out invasive blackberry bushes! Thank you Washington Conservation Corp! You were amazing!
